Apple and Virtual Reality - One year later

In the recent WWDC Apple announced great news regarding Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The first, is the launch of new computers prepared for these technologies, the second is that they have improve the 3D graphics with Metal 2, but the most interesting is what has not been announced, Apple does not launch its own VR platform, nor its own HMD (Virtual reality glasses).

J.F. Rogge - Ernst Thälmann Bust

Today we bring a bust of the German communist leader Ernst Thälmann, made by the German sculptor J.F. Rogge. The sculptor recognized by his busts and monuments first of the leaders of the German National Socialist and after World War II of the communist leaders. Thus many of his works are elaborated on photographs of the characters portrayed with whom he was not always contemporary.

In this case the sculpture of 1959 portrays Ernst Thälmann fifteen years after his execution and after spending eleven years imprisoned by the Nazi government, after being arrested in 1933.

Aladrén, male bust

Emilio Aladrén was a sculptor whose fame is divided between his work and his relationship with the poet Federico García Lorca, whose separation led the Granada poet to New York. His subsequent political alignment would lead to his greatest successes during the Franco dictatorship, portraying the regime's pro-men. In 1944 death overtook him prematurely ending his career with 38 years.

“Unamuno's Head” by Pablo Serrano

Today we bring a sculpture by Pablo Serrano, one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century, founder of El Paso (Group), avant-garde movement, which introduces abstract art in postwar Spain. Its international relevance can be seen in the museums that exhibit its work, such as the MoMA or the Guggenheim in New York, the Hirshhorn in Washington, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg or the Vatican Galleries and in all relevant collections of modern art in Spain.

Benllurie - Bust of a Lady

This week we published a bust of the Spanish Mariano Benlliure, the last master of nineteenth-century realist sculpture in Spain. The bust portrays a lady of the Spanish high society of 1909, when it was portrayed in this marble of 19.5 x 23 cm base and 48 in height.

Mao Zedong - Ceramic

This time a pottery of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. The cult of the figure of this leader has bequeathed us innumerable representations of the same as a man of the people, so at the base we find the motto "at the service of the people" "为人民服务".

The cult of Mao promoted by Lin Biao was one of the bases of the cultural revolution and at that time it was usual to find its image in all kinds of buildings, shops and homes throughout China. Even today his image is common in the halls of many households in rural areas.

Sculptures like these were created all over the country and are easy to find in any antique business or even new copies in art and ceramic stores.

“Aprendiz” by Jerónimo Suñol

Today we present bust of an "apprentice" of the sculptor Jerónimo Suñol, one of the most important sculptors of his time in Spain. The sculpture is made in the stage of artistic refinement in Rome in 1878 and cast in bronze later in Barcelona. This small bust measures 43 cm high on the marble base and 22 x 21 cm in plan.

Adam by Rodin

Our second piece for this sculpture collection is a miniature of Rodin's Adam. This piece of smaller scale than the original, 56cm, seems to be a pre-test to the sculpture of Adam finally made in 1881 to place on the sides of "The Gates of Hell". Although it seems that before this assignment, Rodin already had exposed like "the creation of the man".

Juan Bordes, Sculpture

Today in our blog we start a new series of articles with sculptures that we have scanned in 3D. With this initiative we want to continue sharing from Moøkan our work, especially in the field of cultural diffusion and promotion. Thanks to the agreement with some of our clients we will share some of the sculptures of their private collections giving public access to them in a digital environment.

We have chosen to start, the most contemporary of this series. A complete body of sculptor and architect Juan Bordes, A 46 cm piece in bronze lacquered in white.

Photo-sculpture and Photogrammetry a 150 year leap

Photogrammetry is a modern technique of digital capture of real models, which we have already talked about in this blog. Technique we work on rebuilding sculptures or buildings. This technique analyzes a group of photos of a model from different points of view and with them and many triangulation operations we obtain an automatic model in 3D.

Vulkan: high quality mobile graphics

Day by day the capacity of smartphones is closer to that of desktop computers gradually approaching the so-called convergence. When both platforms will offer similar functionalities and qualities.

This will brings many advantages for users who will find greater and better compatibilities as well as for developers who can more easily produce in cross-platform environments.

Google Daydream

Virtual Reality is gradually becoming a reality within the reach of everyone. Now Google has taken a big step to make it possible, Daydream. This new platform from the creators of Android, aims to turn each of our smartphones into an RV set.

Daydream consists of a Headset, a remote controller and a platform for the software. But it goes further, Google pretends that the next generation of phones is really prepared to offer VR seriously. So little by little we will see how the manufacturers will launch their new devices as Daydream Ready, or ready for the future.

Today we are glad to launch a new video of the Virtual Hall from Moøkan. On this new video we not only show an improvement of the video quality due our new equipment but also a redesigned user experience including the updates we have been talking the past days.

Information Boards
New Settings Menu

With these last adjustments ready we are about to launch a new version of this project, that will be available to download from our website.

Information Boards

Now in our Virtual Hall not only we can enjoy the sculptures but also we can know about them thanks to our new information boards. These boards show us the name of the sculpture and a short explanation of the piece and where it comes from. But what makes these boards truly great is that they only appear when we get close enough to the sculpture, to a comfortable distance to see the sculpture and read the information, and disappear when we get even closer so it doesn't disturb us when taking a close-up view, or when we get away from it to keep always a clean view of the room.

New Settings Menu

In Moøkan we keep working to improve our client's experience and their feedback is the base for our system upgrade. According to this feedback, we have improved our base options and configuration menu, in order to add new functionalities and make it more easy and intuitive to use for any user.

Our Simulations aren't just a walkthrough App. Our menu gives options to choose different spaces or configure the settings to optimize the simulation to your computer and generate a fluid simulation.

The new menu add a Audio Slider that control the output volume for our App, separately of the general computer audio to offer a direct control and allow it keep other audio while the App is running.

Moøkan in Snaptank

In Moøkan we have joined the Snaptank, this 3D scan community, to commercialize our photogrammetry models in a high quality version for professional use. We took the decision after being asked by some users about the original or more detailed version of the models we freely share in Sketchfab.

We hope you find these high definition models useful and we will be glad to hear your comments.

We start with the following two models:

The church of La Asunción  - Snaptank

Updating the cinematographic videos: Virtual Office

Real Time Render is a great tool that allow us to live experiences in a much more natural way, giving us the freedom to interact with the environment, to move freely and to pay attention to the things that interest us.

This doesn't mean at any point that other directed and closed methods as the cinema are loosing its value. Cinema allow us to transmit in a very direct way and the viewer only needs to pay attention to what we want to communicate. Right now in Moøkan we are recording video footage of our projects to offer both communication options.
