“Unamuno's Head” by Pablo Serrano

Today we bring a sculpture by Pablo Serrano, one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century, founder of El Paso (Group), avant-garde movement, which introduces abstract art in postwar Spain. Its international relevance can be seen in the museums that exhibit its work, such as the MoMA or the Guggenheim in New York, the Hirshhorn in Washington, the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg or the Vatican Galleries and in all relevant collections of modern art in Spain.

The digitized sculpture is a test for the head of the monument to Unamuno in Salamanca. Sample of which was realized a series of 6 bronzes. These pieces of similar size to the head of the monument in Salamanca have dimensions of 28.4 x 39 x 27.3 cm.

The monument represents Miguel de Unamuno, philosopher and writer of the ‘98 generation (1898). Walking, pensive, with his hands behind his back, his body blurred and attention remained on his face, becoming the head the central theme of the portrait.

To digitize it we have used 85 photos. We have built a high density 3D mesh of points that we have scaled and cleaned. Later we have optimized for viewing online, replacing the detail eliminated in this process by textures obtained by comparison between the detailed model and the simplified one.

The final model goes from the original 9 million polygons to just 30,000, making it possible to see comfortably from the browser, phones, tablets and computers or virtual reality projects like our Virtual Hall.

本次测试的新软件是在GDC 2016上听取了“Star Wars: Battlefront and the Art of Photogrammetry”的演讲后进行的。

Benllurie - Bust of a Lady

This week we published a bust of the Spanish Mariano Benlliure, the last master of nineteenth-century realist sculpture in Spain. The bust portrays a lady of the Spanish high society of 1909, when it was portrayed in this marble of 19.5 x 23 cm base and 48 in height.

Benlliure begins at an early age, works tirelessly leaving an extensive legacy. His success came soon, winning contests of civil monuments, with orders from the Royal House and also with funerary monuments. Highlights include the monument to Emilio Castelar, the monument to General Martinez Campos, the bust of Goya or the sculptural ensemble of the Metropolis Building on Calle de Alcalá.

The scan of this bust was made from 44 photographs. For further optimization we have tested a new software, “Meshlab”, for the model retopology. Process in which we reduce the detailed model of the scan to one optimized to see online or in our Virtual Museum.

This new software we have tested after listening to the lecture “Star Wars: Battlefront and the Art of Photogrammetry” at GDC 2016. Recognized high quality graphics game where photogrammetry has been the key differentiator to reach new levels of visual realism.

The result can be seen here, in the Sketchfab viewer, by pressing the "5" key, where the mesh of this model is activated. If you compare this mesh with the latest models, you will see that it is not an orderly structure, which has many advantages in animation, but a chaotic triangulation where high quality is achieved by each polygon used. A result that in static objects like these is much more optimal for Real Time 3D and online visualization.

Mao Zedong - Ceramica

Mao Zedong - Ceramic

This time a pottery of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. The cult of the figure of this leader has bequeathed us innumerable representations of the same as a man of the people, so at the base we find the motto "at the service of the people" "为人民服务".

The cult of Mao promoted by Lin Biao was one of the bases of the cultural revolution and at that time it was usual to find its image in all kinds of buildings, shops and homes throughout China. Even today his image is common in the halls of many households in rural areas.

Sculptures like these were created all over the country and are easy to find in any antique business or even new copies in art and ceramic stores.

To scan this ceramic 57cm high and a base of 16cm x 16cm, we made a photogrammetry of 73 photos. Due to the glare and glare of the enamelled surface it would have been advisable to use a circular polarizing filter to remove the reflections from the photos. As it was an improvised work in one of our trips, we did not have this filter, so we built the model with some defects and later with manual work we have reduced it in 3D modeling software.

For these reasons we decided on this occasion to publish the model only in its free version, since the version of much detail does not have the quality suitable for our standards.

Updated!: This model has been reupload after some detail corrections such the flat nose. 2017/May

(Aprendiz)
